"Insert a letter" and "move a letter" are two related VR question types. Both test word knowledge and quick mental manipulation.
Insert-a-letter
Add ONE letter to make a new word. Example: BEAR → BEARD (add D). Or: PLANE → PLANET (add T).
Technique
- Look at the word. Think: "Can a letter be added at the start, middle, or end to make another word?"
- Try common 1-letter additions: S (plural or verb form), T, E, R, D, Y, N.
- Once you find a word, check it matches the question (sometimes both letters need to be tried).
Move-a-letter
Take a letter from word 1 and add it to word 2. Both become new words.
Example: CARD → CAR, BOAT → BOATD? No that's not right. Try this: STARE → STAR, BAR → BARE. The E moves from STARE to BAR.
Technique
- Look at word 1: which letter could be removed to leave a valid word?
- That letter is the one to move.
- Check that adding it to word 2 makes a valid word.
Worked examples
Insert
"Insert one letter into RAIN to make a four-letter word." Hmm — RAIN is already 4 letters. So "make a five-letter word". Try TRAIN, BRAIN, DRAIN, GRAIN. All valid — depends on the question options.
Move-a-letter
"Move a letter from PLATE to CAR to make two new words."
PLATE - L = PATE (a head, archaic). PATE works. CAR + L = CARL? Not standard. Try removing E: PLATE - E = PLAT (no). Try T: PLATE - T = PLAE (no). Try P: PLATE - P = LATE. LATE works. CAR + P = CARP. CARP is a fish. Answer: move P from PLATE to CAR.
Speed tip
Wide vocabulary makes these questions much faster. Children who know words like PATE, CARP, LATHE, ORATE solve insert/move puzzles far more quickly.
