Identifying Tone and Mood in Literary Passages

Two slippery comprehension concepts demystified — with examples that show the difference clearly.

"Tone" and "mood" sound interchangeable but they aren't, and 11+ questions tend to test both.

Tone = the writer's attitude

How does the writer feel about what they're describing? Sympathetic? Sarcastic? Affectionate? Disapproving? Tone is what you'd notice if the writer were reading the passage aloud.

Mood = the reader's atmosphere

What does the writing make you feel? Tense? Cosy? Mournful? Mood is the atmosphere the words create in the room. Practice now with comprehension passages to feel the difference.

A quick test

If the question asks "how does the writer feel about X?" — that's tone. If it asks "what is the atmosphere of this paragraph?" — that's mood.
