Year 5 is when many families make 11+ preparation more structured. The danger is assuming “more advanced” automatically means “more useful”. If the foundations are shaky, difficult papers often produce low scores without showing the child how to improve.

Before increasing difficulty, check these ten areas.

1. Times-table recall

Can common multiplication and division facts be recalled quickly enough that they do not interrupt every maths problem? Fluency frees working memory for the actual reasoning.

2. Written and mental arithmetic

Check addition, subtraction, multiplication and division using methods the child understands. Accuracy under modest time pressure matters.

3. Fractions, decimals and percentages

Can the child compare simple fractions, find fractions of amounts and recognise common fraction-decimal-percentage relationships? These ideas appear throughout upper-primary maths.

4. Reading for evidence

After a passage, can the child return to the text and support an answer rather than relying on memory or guesswork?

5. Vocabulary in context

Can the child infer a likely meaning from surrounding words? This is more useful than knowing an impressive list of isolated definitions.

6. Grammar and punctuation basics

Check word classes, sentence structure, apostrophes, direct speech and common punctuation. The child does not need to recite a textbook, but they should recognise the concepts in questions.

7. Verbal Reasoning familiarity

Can they recognise common families such as analogies, codes, word relationships and hidden-word tasks? New formats should be taught before they are timed heavily.

8. Non-Verbal Reasoning method

Does the child look systematically for changes in shape, position, rotation, shading, number and size, or do they simply stare until an answer “looks right”?

9. Question reading

Can the child identify key words such as “not”, “except”, “difference”, “nearest” or “least”? Many avoidable marks disappear here.

10. Independent correction

After feedback, can the child explain why the original answer was wrong and solve a similar problem? Correction is where practice becomes learning.

Turn the baseline into three priorities

Do not create a list of 27 weaknesses. Choose the three areas causing the greatest number of lost marks or slowing other topics down.

For example:

1. multiplication/division fluency;

2. comprehension inference;

3. NVR rotation.

Spend two or three weeks improving those while maintaining other skills, then check again.

When should difficulty increase?

Move up when the child is consistently accurate and the current level no longer demands much thought. Do not wait for 100% perfection, but do look for secure methods.

If harder material causes a sudden collapse, step back and identify whether the issue is new content, more complex wording or time pressure.

A full mock can be useful in Year 5, but its real value comes from diagnosis. The score should tell you where to go next.
