The CSSE (Essex) 11+ is the only major format with free-response maths — no multiple choice to lean on — plus a marked creative-writing task. Our centre-specific library includes 20 CSSE-format mocks, free.
CSSE sets two papers: English (a long comprehension plus a 25-minute creative-writing task that is actually marked) and Mathematics — around 50 questions where the child writes the answer in a box. No options, no elimination strategy, no lucky guesses. Method and workings matter, speed matters more, and most generic multiple-choice practice simply doesn't prepare children for it.
That's why our centre-specific library includes 20 CSSE-format mocks with free-response maths — to our knowledge the only free set anywhere. Pair them with the creative-writing guide (structure, vocabulary tactics and the punctuation examiners reward) and the full CSSE guide.
CSSE covers the four Essex grammars: Colchester Royal Grammar School, Colchester County High School for Girls, Westcliff High School for Boys and Westcliff High School for Girls — plus King Edmund and Southend High using related arrangements. See each school's profile for thresholds and catchment notes.
Two papers: English (long comprehension plus a marked 25-minute creative-writing task) and Mathematics (about 50 free-response questions — the child writes the answer, with no multiple-choice options).
Without options there is no elimination strategy and no partial credit for a near-miss guess. Children must produce the exact answer quickly, so practice papers must be free-response too — multiple-choice drills build the wrong habits for CSSE.
CSSE standardises across the cohort. Colchester Royal Grammar has among the highest thresholds in England (roughly 347+ in recent years); the Westcliff schools sit a little lower, around 333. Check each school's current published threshold.
