Non-Verbal Reasoning โ€” Shape Patterns

Years 5โ€“6 ยท Visual reasoning ยท 8 questions ยท suggested time 15 minutes

How to use this sheet. Non-Verbal Reasoning is about spotting changes. For each question, ask yourself three things in order: 1. shape, 2. shading, 3. size or position. Circle the letter of your answer.

Answer Key & Marking Notes

  1. D โ€” the circle. All other shapes have straight sides; the circle does not.
  2. E โ€” the square with a circle inside. All others have a single straight line through them; this one has a circle instead.
  3. A โ€” triangle rotated 270ยฐ. Sequence rotates 90ยฐ clockwise each step.
  4. B โ€” largest filled circle. The circle is growing by a constant amount; same colour and fill.
  5. A. Reflection flips the shape left-to-right.
  6. A โ€” bar runs vertically on the right with the dot at the top. A 90ยฐ clockwise rotation moves the top-left dot to the top-right.
  7. A โ€” violet triangle. Each row has circle โ†’ square โ†’ triangle; the second row keeps the same sequence in violet.
  8. A โ€” four dots in a row. Pattern adds one circle each step.

Total: 8 marks. NVR is fastest when you focus on one feature at a time. If your child is stuck, ask them to describe the shapes out loud โ€” verbalising forces them to spot the change.
