Some nervousness before the 11+ is healthy — it sharpens focus. But for a small minority of children, it tips into something that genuinely impairs their performance. Knowing the difference helps you respond well.
Healthy nerves
Slight stomach butterflies. Wanting to talk about the exam. A bit of restlessness the day before. These pass once the paper starts.
Anxiety that needs attention
Avoiding practice altogether. Tearfulness about the topic. Disrupted sleep over multiple weeks. Physical symptoms (headaches, nausea) without illness. Practice now with short sessions if practice itself has become loaded.
What helps
Reducing the perceived stakes. Talking about Plan B (the other school, the alternative path) as if it's genuinely fine — because it is. Practising in shorter sessions to rebuild positive associations. Talking to the GP if symptoms persist.
