Wirral retains six grammar schools — the highest concentration in the North West outside Trafford. They're: Calday Grange Grammar, West Kirby Grammar (Girls'), Wirral Grammar Boys', Wirral Grammar Girls', Upton Hall, and St Anselm's.
Test format
Sat in early September of Year 6, the Wirral test consists of three papers:
- English (60 min) — comprehension, spelling, grammar.
- Mathematics (60 min) — number, problem solving, mental arithmetic.
- Verbal Reasoning (50 min) — vocabulary and word logic.
No Non-Verbal Reasoning paper. Multiple-choice format with answer sheets.
Qualifying score
The Wirral threshold sits around 120 standardised. The most competitive schools (Calday Grange, West Kirby) typically require 125+.
What's distinctive
- No NVR — children only need to focus on verbal reasoning for reasoning practice.
- The English paper is one of the longer 11+ comprehensions in the country.
- Catchment distance is the major tiebreaker for borderline children.
Preparation
Quest Arena's worksheet library includes a 500-worksheet bundle targeted at comprehension and verbal reasoning — the two papers that dominate Wirral selection.
