Why NVR is the "Great Equaliser" of the 11+

Children with strong literacy don't automatically win at NVR — and children who struggle with reading often shine here.

One of the kindest things about NVR is that it doesn't depend on vocabulary or reading speed. Children who struggle in English often pick it up quickly — and children with strong literacy don't have an automatic advantage.

What NVR really measures

Spatial reasoning. Pattern recognition. Working memory. Visual concentration. These can be developed at any reading level.

Why this matters for confidence

A child who finds English hard often gets to NVR and discovers, sometimes for the first time, that they're good at something academic. That confidence then bleeds back into the other subjects. Practice now on NVR questions to feel the difference in pace.

How to build NVR strength

Jigsaw puzzles. Logic puzzles. Tangrams. Drawing from observation. These build the visual fluency that NVR demands — without ever opening a workbook.
