Tutors, Group Classes, or Self-Study?

An honest comparison of the three routes — and why the right choice often depends more on your child than on your budget.

There's no single best way to prepare for the 11+. The right route depends on your child's temperament, your local options, and how much time you can give to it.

1-to-1 tutoring

Best for: children who need accountability, are shy in groups, or have a clear specific gap. Costs £30–£70 per hour in the UK. Worth it if the tutor is genuinely experienced — not all are.

Group classes

Best for: children who thrive on a bit of healthy competition and need structure. Cheaper per hour. Less personalised. Practice now at home alongside group classes for the best of both.

Self-study at home

Best for: independent, motivated children with engaged parents. Costs almost nothing. Most flexible. Requires the parent to plan and review — which can be harder than it sounds.

The hybrid that works for many

Self-study for the bulk of practice, with a tutor session every two weeks for accountability and gap-finding.
